In my final year of university I was contacted by the editorial team of a new student magazine who required a team to brand, layout, artwork and print there new publication. I took the challenge on along with a fellow Falmouth designer, Jonathan Martin (http://www.jonathan-martin.co.uk). Another Falmouth designer, Jessica Augarde (http://augardephotography.daportfolio.com) supplied a lot of the images. An incredibly talented photographer, her work made all the difference to the pages.
The magazine attempted to foster the best in creative talent across the student body and unite it in one intelligent but amusing, stimulating but democratic space.
Is it possible to take bad shots of 3-week-olds?
Last year we visited my girlfriend’s family in bonny Scotland. We had a great time but unfortunately it did rain quite a lot. We were driving to this amazing hotel (http://www.lake-hotel.com/dining/restaurant.aspx – seriously go there) for dinner when the rain finally stopped. Loch Ard looked awesome, resulting in us precariously parking up the ditch while my girlfriend ran across the road and took the snap – so I can’t even claim it’s mine…

I was briefed to think of an in-store activity and an accompanying marketing campaign to increase footfall in White stuff stores by White Stuff’s artistic director in the final round of their selection process. In the end, I came second, but I’m still pleased with the project’s concept and the recognisable outcome it was agreed that it would have achieved for the company. The idea being, that customers sketch their happiest memory to get 15% off and have the amusing results hung up in store. This enacts the company’s mantra ‘bringing happy back’, and progresses the quirky marketing the company is renowned for into something the customer actively participates in. It is aimed to encourage both word of mouth publicity and friendly interaction between customers and staff, forwarding their aim to make customers feel part of the White Stuff family through encouraging laughter and the sharing of memories.

As my girlfriend reaches the end of her publishing course she, along with some friends had to present a marketing strategy for a new publication to a board of publishing VIPs. The group’s idea was for an educational series of books surrounding a self-searching gorilla, Quaver Crotchet who would introduce children to music. With Emma’s direction I illustrated a couple of the characters and came up with various elements to embellish her presentation. Although I wouldn’t really describe myself as an illustrator I do love to do a bit know and again. I started off with my trusted pencil before finishing in ai – I did have a bit of help with the jungle background which I acquired from http://www.vectorjungle.com before altering to suit.
Over Easter I got away from London for the week with my girlfriend’s family to the Lake District. Here are a few cheeky shots I took while embracing the great outdoors… and proof that we made it to the top!
Ridgeway Farm has been in my family for over a century, it is where I was raised and is where many of my relatives think of as home and will continue to for many years. My childhood of Wellington boots, over-alls and engine oil sometimes, for me, seems a million miles away from my current city life. It felt strange to be photographing something that is very personal to me, objectively. Anyway below are ‘Angel’, my Nan’s 18 hand pet and Bobby at a couple of weeks old.

While messing around with my camera and taking pics of the traffic (while probably looking a bit dodgy) I managed to take this photo. I mean it’s not the best but I’m getting the hang slowly…
A good buddy from work (who is rather handily a photography buff) noted while looking through online portfolio’s how it’s easier to take great pics when your subject is easy on the eye. I don’t get much opportunity to do portraiture however I managed to talk my better half into posing for half an hour. I’d love to think it’s my composition, depth of field and lighting that I like about this pic… but maybe Ed was right and it’s the pretty subject.
My base at home is Ludlow which is a pretty stunning town famous for it’s food and architecture. I love this view, in fact a good buddy chose to get married right where I was stood when taking the pic. I’ve really got to make more of an effort and get my arse out of bed earlier to take advantage of the morning light…
